Skookumchuck
Narrows Trail is located near Egmont on the Sechelt Peninsula. Chinook
for 'strong water', the Skookumchuck rapids are fascinating to watch
at the change of tide, as the direction of the saltwater flow switches.
The awesome power and spectacle of these salt water rapids, framed
by a backdrop of snow capped mountains, makes a dramatic destination
for a hike.
The trails are well maintained, wide and comfortable to walk. A
pleasant outing enhanced by the moving display by Mother Nature.
The round trip hike is 1.5 to 2 hours (8 kms)
From Madeira
Park travel 20 minutes north on the Sunshine Coast Highway (101)
toward Earl's Cove. Turn
left onto Egmont Road toward Egmont
and the Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park parking lot, shortly
before the village of Egmont.
In order to fully appreciate this natural phenomenon, visitors should
plan their outing to Skookumchuck to coincide with the change in
tides. Check local Newspapers for the best viewing times of the
rapids.
